Early in 2022, violent storms hit Cumbria, uprooting thousands of trees. Root plates, trailing torn roots or studded with fragments of rock, were suddenly exposed. Taking these as her starting point, Townsend imagines hybrid beings in which animal, plant and mineral are intertwined and interdependent. These beings bear the marks of each tree’s trauma but also carry the hope of new life.
